Opportunities to serve

Lesotho Shepherd Storying Ministry
Full Term
Lesotho

As part of this outreach, you'll serve among the highland shepherds of Lesotho, a group on the margins of society, helping to disciple believers and share the gospel through relational ministry and Bible storying.

The small team is working to develop Christian leaders from among the shepherd community, equip them to take the gospel to other shepherds, to establish 'Shepherd Church' in whatever format works for them. They also work alongside local church leaders to help instill vision for the Shepherd ministry and mission beyond Lesotho's borders.

One of the challenges in working with a transient community is discipleship, as it's often difficult to maintain contact with those who have committed their lives to Christ. The primary focus of this role will be working with existing Lesotho Unit members and shepherds to help develop a new audio 'Discipleship' story set, which will supplement the existing 'Gospel' story set that has been a key part of the ministry to date.

Since many of the shepherds are illiterate, being able to communicate orally is often the only way to reach out to them. The stories are intended to be easily memorized so that they can be passed from shepherd to shepherd in the mountains. The new story set will include stories related to living out Christian principles, discipleship, and how to share the gospel with others.

There will be regular opportunities for 1:1 discipleship and mentoring with the shepherds in the mountains, surrounding villages, and in church settings. The team works to model how to share the gospel to enable shepherds and church leaders to see and replicate this process in a culturally appropriate manner.

We're seeking self-motivated individuals with strong Bible-based teaching ability and the ability to feed oneself spiritually in an isolated ministry location; those with a willingness to meet the shepherds where they are and draw alongside them; flexible individuals with the ability to work alone at times or to collaborate and work under the direction of others in the unit and with nationals who have experience in storying and ministering to shepherds, and those with the ability to cope with often challenging physical conditions in this remote rural setting.
